The Greatest Female Wrestlers Ever
When we think of professional wrestling, we typically think of the men. Huge bodybuilder physiques with comic book personalities practically defines the WWE, and if you asked people to name their favorite wrestlers, you are almost guaranteed to get male names. However, the leading ladies of WWE are terrific stars in their own right, even if they can’t go toe to toe with the males stars when it comes to their brute strength, and make no mistake, these women would destroy 99% of men in a fight.
The role of women in the WWE has advanced a lot in recent decades, with the girls transitioning from primarily being side characters who were as known for their looks as their fighting skills to becoming stars who can headline big pay-per-view events on their own. They are given chances to show off both their physical prowess as well as their personalities as female wrestlers are being given better storylines than ever. The competition is tough when choosing the top ladies, but nonetheless we have selected four of the greatest female wrestlers ever
Trish Stratus
Trish Stratus is the perfect example of a woman in the WWE who was able to go from the earlier, more sexualized role for women in wrestling to becoming a bonafide wrestling star. She started off managing Test and Albert, aka T&A, which tells you just what we were dealing with as far as the treatment of women in the WWE goes. However, as time went on she was able to take her career to another level.
It took time, and there were numerous sexualized storylines she took part in, but she kept at it and proved herself as a great wrestler. In 2013 she entered the WWE Hall of Fame, and she has seven WWE Women’s Championship titles, which stands as the record. Her influence on other female wrestlers cannot be overstated, and she helped usher in a new era where women were given a bigger role.
Charlotte Flair
Ric Clair is one of the all time great wrestlers, with sixteen championships under his belt as well as multiple Hall of Fame entries. With that in her blood, Charlotte Flair had big shoes to fill, and she also had to overcome the barriers to women that are inherent in the WWE. She managed to do both and emerged as one of the greatest female wrestlers of all time.
Charlotte has her father’s determination to succeed, and she is supremely gifted athletically. She made her debut in 2012, and in less than a decade she managed to win 15 women’s singles championships and 13 women’s world championships. In 2016 she and Sasha Banks were the first women to headline a pay-per-view event for the WWE, and a few years later she, Becky Lynch, and Ronda Rousey were the first women to headline WrestleMania. Charlotte broke down barriers, and she continues to be one of the WWE’s greatest stars.
Lita
Amy Dumas, AKA Lita, deserves her status as one of the greatest female wrestlers ever. She was definitely ahead of her time, but she has come to be recognized for her talents, entering the Hall of Fame in 2014. She won the Women’s Championship four times since her 1999 debut, and she has many iconic moments in her career, such as her famous “Litasault” which sees her finishing off her opponents with a backflip.
She has come a long way since her early days in the Consejo Mundial Lucha Libre, and she took female wrestling to the next level, participating in the first women’s cage match as well as being the main event for RAW multiple times. She may not have gone as far as some of the female wrestlers of today, but she helped pave the way for their success.
Becky Lynch
Becky Lynch, who was born in Ireland with the real name “Rebecca Quin,” is not just one of the WWE’s top female wrestlers, but is one of their top wrestlers, period. She joined the WWE in 2013 after a decade of wrestling independently across the globe, and she quickly worked her way up as one of the league’s biggest names, building up a huge audience that looked forward to watching her every match.
She has become the Smackdown Women's Champion four times as well as the RAW Women's Champion, and when she beat Charlotte Flair and Ronda Rousey in WrestleMania 33, she became known as Becky Two Belts for being the only wrestler to have both belts to her name. She also has the record as the longest-running Raw Women’s Champion, holding it for 398 days before she had to go on hiatus because of her pregnancy.
